How can we help you?
We value open communication with patients and encourage questions that help you feel confident in your dental care. Many of our most common questions are listed here, but if you have a specific question or one that requires an immediate answer, we welcome you to get in touch with our Korumburra or Inverloch dental clinics and our team will be happy to help.
At your next visit, our dentists will be happy to explain your procedure and treatment options so that you have all of the information you need to keep your smile healthy and attractive.
With the recent news and public impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19), our dental team wanted to share some of the protocols we have in place to protect your health and wellness at your dental visit.
As part of your health care team, we are monitoring changes and updated guidelines set forth by the Australian Department of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) in our practice, interactions, and work environment to ensure patient and team safety. Since information is updated regularly, we recommend checking the latest recommendations.
Your number one line of safety is an educated and dedicated dental team. We have met with our entire staff to discuss protocols for keeping ourselves and patients safe, including symptoms to look for and what to do in the event of exposure.
Sterilisation and Pathogen Control
- Our dental clinic always maintains the highest cleanliness standards and sterilisation protocols using ADA-approved disinfectants and/or the barrier method to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
- We use medical-grade disinfectants and cleaners shown to eliminate bacteria and viruses.
- All instruments are sterilised using ADA-approved methods between each patient. Instrument carriers are equipped with indicators that show they have reached the proper temperature during the process.
- Many of our instruments and supplies are designed for single use. Once used, they are immediately disposed of safely.
- Sterilisation equipment is maintained and certified regularly.
- Common areas like reception desks, public toilet, and consultation areas are all regularly cleaned and sterilised to prevent disease spread outside of the treatment room.
- We have safety protocols in place in the event that our patients or dental team are exposed to coronavirus.
How Coronavirus Impacts Your Dental Appointment
Please contact us right away if any of the following conditions apply:
- You have travelled outside of the country in the last month.
- You have a cough, fever, shortness of breath, or flu-like symptoms.
- You have had contact with anyone who has been exposed to the coronavirus.
We are happy to rearrange bookings for patients who feel unwell or suspect they may have COVID-19.
How We Can Reduce the Spread of Coronavirus Together
Practising common sense caution can help slow the spread of coronavirus. Here are some vital actions you can take, recommended by the WHO.
- Wash your hands frequently using soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds.
- Use hand sanitizer with a minimum of 60% alcohol if hand washing is unavailable.
- Do not touch your eyes, nose, face, or mouth unless you have clean hands.
- Maintain distance from others in public of at least six feet.
- Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough.
- Stay at home if you are sick.
- Throw used tissues away immediately.
- If you are sick and must go out, wear a facemask.
If you have recently found disinfectants unavailable due to the demand for these products, you can make your own solution at home using 1/3 cup of bleach per gallon of water. Never mix bleach with any other types of cleaners or ammonia. You can also use alcohol solutions at 70% alcohol or higher.
If you have any questions or concerns about coronavirus, the action we are taking, or if you should come in for your dental appointment, we welcome you to call our clinic.
For now, we are still open Monday to Friday however will be reducing our hours on certain days. We may also do some follow-up appointments offsite.
We understand that it can cause anxiety waiting to know how much your treatment will cost, so we always inform you of any costs you may incur in a procedure. An estimate quote is always available once a tailor-made treatment plan has been made. Without a full evaluation, estimating the cost of treatment is difficult as each patient is unique and requires customised dental care.
We adamantly believe in providing patients dentistry at a great value by staying up-to-date on the latest clinical techniques and using the most modern materials on the market today.
In cases where multiple options exist to resolve oral health conditions, we will always present conservative dental options alongside ideal treatment solutions and respect the choice you make for your smile.
We are not here to recommend one treatment over another because we think one is superior. We are here to educate and inform and to provide the dentistry you choose for yourself.
Both Dr How and Dr Chan will present treatment options, along with the benefits and limitations of each so you can make an informed choice regarding the future of your smile.

Dentistry is a team effort, and that team involves the patient. We can advise the patient of the likelihood of success with any particular treatment; however, equally important to the skill of our clinicians is the level of maintenance the patient exercises.
We guarantee we will do our best or refer you to the right person for your procedure, and we will inform you of the longevity of your treatment choices based on the knowledge we have.
Here are a few ways you can improve the longevity of your dental restorations:
Be sure your home dental hygiene is consistent and impeccable. If you need a refresher course on how to brush and floss with proper technique, we are here to help. Cleaning teeth is one of our favourite topics!
Be sure to maintain proper preventive dentistry visits. Your six-month dental check-up and clean is recommended to protect your teeth because it makes it possible for Dr How and Dr Chan to detect any problems when they are small and easily treatable.
Use a nightguard if you grind your teeth. Bruxism, or teeth grinding and clenching, can cause broken teeth and damaged fillings or crowns. Teeth grinding will significantly decrease the life of your dentistry and could cause significant damage to teeth, resulting in the need for more restorative dentistry.
At Avid Dental, we always present every treatment option available and encourage patients to make the choice that works best for them. In some cases, however, one treatment will be more appropriate to resolve the condition. For example, a dental filling might not provide sufficient support to protect a tooth, especially a molar, when deep decay is removed.
A dental crown completely covers the tooth and adds stability by ‘holding it together’ when exposed to the force of chewing. Inadequately supported teeth may break or split and require extraction. Both Dr How and Dr Chan aim to protect your natural teeth when possible because keeping natural teeth strong and stable is usually the most economical and simplest solution to maintaining a healthy smile.
In most cases, it is possible to have a tooth-coloured dental crown that will complement the appearance of your smile. For posterior (back) teeth, we might offer a gold crown to provide improved longevity. We will present that as an option and respect the choice you make.
As part of the personalised dental care we provide, we will always discuss every option and their benefits. We welcome questions and look forward to helping you achieve your smile goals.
Our aim when treating any patient is to ensure that we leave your smile the same or better than when you walked in. We use tooth-coloured materials wherever possible. The best dentistry is the kind you never see.
In situations where gold or metal-based restorations will provide longer lasting or superior results, we will present them as a treatment option and allow you to make the choice that works best for your lifestyle and oral health goals.
Replacing Metal-Based Dentistry
Some patients want to eliminate all metal-based dentistry from their smiles either because of health concerns over mercury-containing fillings or because of dark margins at the base of crowns that interfere with aesthetics.
Dr How and Dr Chan are happy to discuss the benefits of tooth-coloured dentistry and to organise a treatment plan to give you an ideal outcome.
We offer the following tooth-coloured restorations at our Inverloch and Korumburra dental clinic locations:
To learn more about modern, tooth-coloured dental options or to arrange a cosmetic dentistry consultation, we invite you to get in touch. The Avid dental team looks forward to helping you gain confidence with a fabulous smile.
Our highly trained team is very experienced in assisting patients to complete their treatment with minimal physical or psychological discomfort. From the moment you step into our office, care is taken to ensure you are as relaxed as possible.
Many patients fear injections more than the procedure itself. You will be happy to know that we use a powerful topical anaesthetic to numb the area before applying a local anaesthetic via injection. This reduces discomfort and makes the entire process as painless as possible.
For particularly fearful patients or those with elaborate treatment plans, we also offer sedation dentistry by prescribing pharmaceuticals to induce relaxation. Once patients meet our team and develop a trusting relationship, they find that sedation is not necessary, as we will never proceed with a procedure unless you feel completely confident and comfortable.
If you have concerns about your dental appointment or have had a negative experience in the past, we invite you to share your concerns with us so that we can put your mind at ease. You are always in control of your care, and we will stop straight away if you ever feel uncomfortable in any way.
Your comfort is our top priority at Avid Dental.
